Expo 2027 is one of the most important global events held every four years, and Belgrade has recently become the host of this prestigious occasion. Since Serbia will organize a World Expo for the first time, this event represents a significant step in modernizing infrastructure, as well as an opportunity for international promotion of the country. But what exactly can we expect from EXPO 2027 in Belgrade, beyond a flood of tourists, intense construction work, and, of course, the inevitable rise in coffee prices? And how much will all of this cost? Let’s take a closer look.

What is EXPO and what is its purpose?

Expo is a world exhibition where countries, companies, institutions, and organizations come together to showcase the latest technologies, cultures, innovations, and ideas. The theme of the exhibition in Belgrade is “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All,” focusing on the importance of play, sport, and music and their contribution to human development. Belgrade ultimately won over Malaga in Spain, Minnesota in the USA, Phuket in Thailand, and Bariloche in Argentina.

Around 120 countries, international organizations, and companies will have the opportunity to address the assigned theme across 25 hectares of exhibition space through various programs and activities. The EXPO event lasts for three months.

In previous years, similar events have left lasting impacts in the form of new technologies, global collaborations, and increased tourism for host countries.

As the host, Belgrade gains the opportunity to showcase its capabilities, as well as its challenges, on the global stage. Expo 2027 in Belgrade is not just an exhibition. It is a platform that facilitates the exchange of ideas, promotes sustainable development, and strengthens the global network of innovation and partnerships.

It is estimated that over 4 million domestic and international visitors will attend during the exhibition.

What are the benefits for Belgrade and Serbia?

We all know that global attention does not often fall on the Balkans. Belgrade, as the host, uses this opportunity to increase its international visibility and position itself as a serious player on the world stage. Expo 2027 will allow Serbia to be in the spotlight, boost tourism, and, most importantly, create long-term economic and political relationships with other countries, much to the delight of politicians.

Expo 2027 also involves major infrastructure projects, including new transport connections, urban modernization, and improvements in ecological infrastructure. Yes, after years of neglect and stagnation, Belgrade will finally have the chance to take a serious step toward modernizing its spaces and supporting services. New hotels, infrastructure, and business facilities are just some of the benefits that come with Expo. Although construction has been ongoing, this event will accelerate investment and development even further.

Locations and facility plans

The event will be divided into three zones: E1, E2, E3

E1 zone is a spatial-functional zone planned as an exhibition area with pavilions and supporting facilities, including halls, conference rooms, and infrastructure areas. The designated construction plot for E1 covers over 830,000 square meters. Also with the largest individual plot planned to be a maximum of 5 hectares.

E2 is intended for participant accommodation and commercial facilities.

E3 is planned for additional commercial services for participants.

According to the plan, the Expo complex’s linear infrastructure will include 8 kilometers of city boulevards, a traffic loop, an overpass, gas and heating pipelines, water supply, and a 15-hectare parking area.

Excavation work on a 100-hectare area is also planned, expected to last 12 months.

Public companies involved in EXPO 2027 include EPS, Elektro Mreže, Belgrade Thermal Power Plants, the Land Directorate, Serbia Gas, and Serbian Railways.

As you can see, this is a major project.

The significance of Ronaldinho’s visit

Former football superstar and one of the best players of this century, Ronaldinho, announced his attendance at EXPO 2027. He addressed the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, directly via video call. The news caused a huge buzz, and even the announcement itself generated significant interest. Ronaldinho is a brand in himself, and his involvement in the event is a major plus. In terms of marketing power, the portal “Give Me Sport” ranks him among the highest-paid athletes for Instagram posts. With over 70 million followers, he holds ninth place, and one post is estimated to cost around $250,000. With events like this often commanding similar or higher fees.

How much will EXPO 2027 cost Serbia?

Now, the favorite question! How much will EXPO 2027 cost Serbia? While some argue that good PR is priceless, the reality is that the budget for organizing this event is significant. Official estimates suggest costs could reach around 1.5 billion euros. Although earlier estimates were much higher. Around 15 billion euros, the Serbian government and finance ministry stated the total will likely be about 1.5 billion. So we’ll take their word for it.

Since a large portion of funding is expected from foreign investments, public funds, and sponsorships, Serbia will not bear the entire financial burden alone. Significant resources will still need to be invested in infrastructure and preparation. All costs, from renovating exhibition spaces to building new bridges and metro lines, will not end with the Expo’s conclusion. In the long term, this event is expected to be a major catalyst for Serbia’s economy, contributing to employment, new tourism opportunities, and international investments.

Belgrade as the center of the world

Through Expo 2027, Belgrade has the chance to become a key global center for innovation, sustainability, and creative solutions. At the same time, this is an excellent opportunity for Serbia to showcase everything it can offer the world, from hospitality and cuisine to young talents competing in future industries.

At the very least, Belgrade will momentarily become the center of attention globally, and perhaps finally find an answer to the question: “How can we proudly showcase our capabilities without indebting another generation?”
