Few names from the turbulent Balkan 1990s continue to spark as much curiosity and controversy as that of Željko Ražnatović Arkan. His life has been examined from almost every possible angle. From paramilitary operations and organized crime to football hooliganism and politics. Far less attention, however, has been paid to what followed after his violent death in 2000, particularly the fate of those closest to him. The lives of Arkan’s children have remained shrouded in half truths, speculation and silence, shaped at once by privilege and by the heavy burden of history. Arkan had nine children from several relationships, a subject explored in more detail below.
Growing Up in the Shadow of a Powerful Name
Arkan had several children from different relationships, and their childhoods were anything but ordinary. Growing up as the son or daughter of one of the most infamous and feared figures in Serbia meant living between two extremes. On one side were wealth, visibility and access to elite social circles. On the other were constant media scrutiny, security risks and a surname that could open doors just as easily as it could abruptly close them.
For some of his children, early life unfolded under strict security measures, often far from the public eye. Even before Arkan’s death, parts of the family lived with the awareness that their safety could never be fully guaranteed. Such an environment left a deep mark on their upbringing and later strongly influenced their decisions on whether to embrace public life or turn away from it altogether.
The Assassination of Arkan
When Arkan was assassinated in January 2000, his family suddenly found itself in a completely new and uncertain reality. The political climate in Serbia was changing rapidly, and the structures that had once enabled his rise were beginning to collapse. Overnight, his children lost not only their father but also the protective framework that had surrounded the family for years.
In the years that followed, the property and legacy associated with Arkan became the subject of legal disputes, media speculation and constant public attention. For his children, this meant growing up in an atmosphere where their surname was persistently linked to criminal allegations and unresolved questions, regardless of their personal choices or actions.
Different Paths and Public Life
Veljko and Anastasija Ražnatović
Željko Ražnatović Arkan had nine children from several relationships. But the ones who became most visible to the public were Veljko Ražnatović and Anastasija Ražnatović, the children he had with his wife, Svetlana Ceca Ražnatović. Unlike other members of the family who largely withdrew from public life, Veljko and Anastasija consciously chose a highly visible, media exposed path.
Veljko Ražnatović first drew public attention through sports, particularly boxing, which he pursued seriously for several years. His life was also marked by various controversies, from incidents and legal issues in his younger years to a later retreat from the urban public scene. Today, he leads a quieter family life, devoted to his wife and children, as well as his boxing career, which led him to leave Serbia and temporarily reside in Russia.
Anastasija Ražnatović, on the other hand, built a career in the music industry. As a singer and public figure, she has become one of the most followed personalities of her generation on social media. Her career has often been the subject of debate, as her success and popularity were frequently viewed through the lens of her family name. Nevertheless, Anastasija has managed to establish herself as an independent figure in the entertainment industry, building an identity that, at least in part, stands apart from her father’s legacy.
Vojin Ražnatović
It is also worth mentioning Vojin Ražnatović, Arkan’s son who chose a far more discreet relationship with the public compared to Veljko and Anastasija. Although he did give several interviews over the years in which he spoke about his father, his childhood and the burden of the surname he carries.
Vojin Ražnatović spent most of his life outside Serbia, primarily in Western Europe, where he built a private and professional life far removed from the domestic media scene. In his rare public appearances, he emphasized that he did not wish to build a career on his father’s name or become part of the entertainment or political world. His interviews attracted attention precisely because they offered a calm, often critical perspective, free from romanticization or mythologization of Arkan’s persona.
He spoke openly about how difficult it is to bear the Ražnatović surname, especially abroad. Where his father’s name is almost exclusively associated with crime and war crimes, leaving little room for nuance. Unlike parts of the family that remained in Serbia and accepted public visibility, Vojin consciously chose distance, both from the media and from anything that might reconnect him to the past.
In contrast, Arkan’s other children largely avoided media exposure altogether. Many pursued their education and continued their lives abroad, far from the media and domestic public attention, deliberately avoiding the spotlight that the Ražnatović surname almost inevitably attracts.
The Role of the Mother and Constant Public Presence
The central figure in the post Arkan period was Svetlana Ceca Ražnatović, one of the most famous singers in Serbia and the wider region. Her popularity, which had already been enormous before Arkan’s death, grew even further in the early 2000s, ensuring that the Ražnatović name remained permanently present in the public sphere.
Over the years, Ceca faced numerous controversies and legal issues. The most prominent case involved accusations of financial misconduct related to football. For which she was convicted and served a sentence under house arrest. These events further polarized public opinion and once again raised questions about the blurred lines between entertainment, politics and crime in post 1990s Serbia.
Despite everything, Ceca remained active on the music scene and is still regarded today as one of the most commercially successful singers in the Balkans. Her career, marked by highs, lows and controversies, strongly influenced the lives of her children. On one hand, it provided them with financial security and a public platform. On the other, it sustained constant media interest in the family’s private life, often beyond their control.
Living with a Controversial Legacy
Today, Arkan’s children lead very different lives, shaped by personal choices but also by the burden of their family name. Some have managed to distance themselves almost completely from their father’s past. While others have embraced a public identity, aware that such a legacy is impossible to escape entirely.
What unites them is the fact that they grew up in the shadow of a history that continues to divide society. Their lives illustrate how the consequences of power, violence and fame do not end with one generation but are carried forward to the next. The story of Arkan’s children is therefore not merely a continuation of the biography of a controversial man. But a testimony to how difficult it is to build one’s own identity when a surname is already written into history.
